Trust Funding Paves The Way for New Research

Research Grants The Horse Trust has awarded three new grants for scientific research and five clinical scholarships to begin in January 2008.

The Trust has continuing commitment to funding an extensive programme of research projects.  Excellent progress is being made by existing grant holders and there is potential for very exciting developments in diagnosis and prediction of some of the most complex ailments affecting equines. Because of this commitment The Trust has decided not to invite applications for grants for new research work to begin in 2009 as it anticipates extending support for existing work.

The new grants for scientific research have been awarded to Dr June Elizabeth Swinburne of the Animal Health Trust for her work in identifying the genetic defect in Fell Pony Syndrome (£113,615); Dr J Matthews of the Department of Parasitology, Moredun Research Institute, for work on identifying phenotypic and genotypic characterisation of moxidectin resistance in cyathostomes (£241,822) and Dr Martin Paul Weaver of the University of Edinburgh Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Science for his study of molecular events underlying laminitis pain and novel analgesic treatment (£188,155).
