Beware Internet Horse Trading Warns Home of Rest for Horses
Buying a horse over the internet is potentially dangerous and
irresponsible, warns leading equine charity The Home of Rest for
Horses.
"Internet dealers prey on the naivety of prospective new horse
owners by presenting professional, attractive websites offering a 'buy
without viewing' option," says the Home's head of welfare Rebecca
Evans.
One family which contacted the Home had fallen victim to such
an internet horse dealer. They believed they were sold a 12 year old
fit and healthy 15.2 hand bay gelding. What they got was a horse well
into its 20s with a significant pelvic injury.
This was discovered after a few months when the horse went
lame and the vet was consulted. He immediately recommended the horse no
longer be ridden and retired leaving the owner confused and very upset.
"In this case the Home was in a position to offer this horse
sanctuary for the rest of its life," Rebecca Evans added. "But equine
charities will not be able to cope with the number of unwanted horses
should this practice continue. We advise everyone thinking of buying a
horse to take every possible precaution write down and stick to the
qualities you are seeking, take an experienced horse owner with you to
view the animal, commission a full veterinary examination and undertake
a 'test ride' to prevent these dealers profiting from inexperienced
horse lovers."
