Two gentle giants from Manchester have retired to The Home of Rest for Horses in Buckinghamshire.
Dawkins and Cratchit, two 18-year-old geldings from the Greater Manchester Police Mounted Section were named after characters from Charles Dickens novels. Cratchit, a 17 hh grey and Dawkins, a 18.1 hh bay, have served the police and the people of Manchester for 14 years.
Dawkins, who was able to deal with any situation, proved to be what is known in the mounted police section as a "stonewaller". Patrolling at major football matches in the city including the FA Cup and European Championships, he has dealt with some difficult and demanding situations during his long career. His last active duty was in October 2005 and he is now looking forward to a less demanding life.
Cratchit approached each day’s work with his ears pricked, eager to patrol the streets of Manchester. A real favourite with the Inspector of the GMP he was reliable, stoic and brave.
"We are delighted to welcome these two sturdy fellows to The Home," said Shirley Abbott, yard manager of the charity. "Both have served many years with the police and are now ready to enjoy a much deserved retirement."
