The Horse Trust has welcomed seven new arrivals to its Home of Rest for Horses in Buckinghamshire. Three
miniature Shetlands, two horses from the Greater Manchester Police Mounted section, a mule and a hinny
have all retired to the charity's sanctuary near High Wycombe.
Missy, a strawberry roan, has become the smallest resident at the stables measuring a tiny 33 inches. Her companion, Dino, a palomino and Thuglet, a bay gelding, both stand a proud 3 inches taller. Redburn and Dombey, named after characters from Charles Dickens' novels, join fellow Manchester pals Dawkins, Cratchit and Fagin who retired to the sanctuary in 2006.
Sara-Lee Silver, a part bred Arab hinny, has joined our family of donkeys. A hinny is the offspring of a stallion horse and a jenny donkey. A hinny generally has the body of a donkey with the extremities of the horse. The ears are shorter than a mule's and the mane and tail longer and thicker. Amber, a 12 hh chestnut mare mule arrived with Sara. Back in 1886 The Home of Rest for Horses was set up for the provision of care for horse, mules and donkeys. The arrival of a mule well over a century later goes some way to preserve the tradition of the charity.
