The Horse Trust announces new President
Baroness Mallalieu QC, a Life Peer and a passionate advocate of the countryside and riding, has become the new President of The Horse Trust. Baroness Ann Mallalieu was elected at the charity's Annual General Meeting (AGM), which took place on 14 May at the charity's Home of Rest for Horses in Speen, Buckinghamshire.
Baroness Mallalieu has had a high-profile career as a criminal barrister and in 1991 was made a life peer as Baroness of Studdridge in the County of Buckinghamshire. She replaces the outgoing president, Lady Belinda Somerleyton, who has been the President of the charity since 1965.
"We are delighted to welcome Baroness Mallalieu QC as the new President of The Horse Trust. We look forward to working with her to promote the health and welfare of horses, ponies and donkeys throughout the UK," said Paul Jepson, Chief Executive and Veterinary Director of The Horse Trust.
"We would also like to thank Lady Somerleyton for her many years of service to the charity. In the time that she has been President, we have gone through major changes - from our initial focus of providing sanctuary to horses, to the wide range of activities that we are currently involved in around equine welfare, education and science."
Two new trustees were also appointed to The Horse Trust at its AGM last week: Elizabeth Buchanan CVO, former Private Secretary to The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall and Peter Clegg, a Professor of Equine Surgery at the University of Liverpool. The charity also welcomed Rodney Mann, a former managing director for a FTSE 100 company, who was appointed as trustee and treasurer at the end of 2008.
Buchanan was Private Secretary to Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall from 1998 to 2008 and is now a full-time organic livestock farmer. Until recently, Buchanan was a competitive dressage rider, competing internationally for Canada at small tour level. She was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in 2009.
Professor Peter Clegg is a Professor in equine orthopaedics and surgery at the University of Liverpool. His current research focus is equine orthopaedics, in particular identifying the basic mechanisms of injury and repair in equine joints and tendons. Clegg is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons, and a RCVS recognised specialist in equine surgery (orthopaedics and soft tissue).
Rodney Mann has been appointed Treasurer of The Horse Trust. Mann has over thirteen years experience as a non-executive Chairman and Director of various companies. Prior to this, he worked as a Managing Director for FTSE 100 company Grand Metropolitan Plc, which has since merged with Guinness Plc to form Diageo.
Buchanan, Clegg and Mann replace outgoing trustees Andrew Kendall, Jeremy Kerr and Jenny Mumford, who were all thanked at the AGM for their many years service to the charity.
