16hh black gelding, born in 1989

Union, also known as “Onion", arrived at The Horse Trust in August 2012. He retired to us from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, where he served as a Trooper.  Union has taken part in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, the Royal Wedding in 2011 and every Trooping of the Colour since 1995 both as a Trooper and a Band Horse.

WO1 K McNamara RHG/D (Retd) rode Union on ceremonial parades from 2009 including The State Opening of Parliament and many State Visits in both London and Windsor. He also rode Union at the Queen’s Birthday Parade in 2010 and had the honour of carrying the Standard in front of HM The Queen and millions of viewers watching on TV.

When we asked WO1 K McNamara RHG/D (Retd) to tell us about Union, this is what he said,

Union 2

"I knew this would be the horse I would use for parades. In my opinion he is the ultimate Household Cavalry Horse, you just had to jump on and press play! He had the right temperament for an experienced rider or a beginner. Union's stable manners were perfect allowing anybody into his stall to groom, clip or do whatever was needed around him. Union was never going to be a show jumper, hunter or dressage horse he never had the structure for that, but in terms of state ceremonial he was the ultimate horse, in terms of being a comfortable ride and getting me back to camp safe with the Standard. Whenever ridden in front of HM The Queen or anyone his tongue would always hang out!'
