Annabelle - 16hh grey mare born 1993

   Annabelle POLICE

Annabelle had been with the Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch - Great Scotland Yard Stables since 1997 and was the longest serving grey. This gorgeous Irish Draught cross came to us in May 2015, she was an operational police horse based at Kings Cross and Great Scotland Yard. During her career, Annabelle had been involved in all Ceremonial Parades, which included State Opening of Parliament and has been on duty for Trooping the Colour. She was also stationed at Bow Police Station for a while and atteneded numerous events and football matches. This brave mare was also involved in policing the student demonstrations in London in 2010, where her rider was pulled from her back and she sustained injuries to her hock whilst caught in the middle of the crowd. She also had the major honour in being part of the “Grey Escorts” that were made up of 9 other grey horses at the Royal Wedding in 2011. Annabelle escorted the Royal Carriage Procession for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace. More recently she was utilised by the training establishment at Imber Court where recruits are taught to ride. Her strong nature meant she took a while to settle in with us, as it was a big change going from the busy environment in London, to a quiet life in the Chiltern Hills.  Thankfully she has found her feet and is now enjoying her retirement with all her other companions.

Former rider of 5 years Alison Osbourne (pictured) describes Annabelle as “a people’s horse” and she “instantly fell in love with her”. Alison expressed her relationship with Annabelle as a “great horse and rider bond”, and she was also teased by other members of staff for this special partnership by calling her after the famous “My Little Pony!” Sadly, Alison medically retired from the force in 2003 and could not continue riding Annabelle.

Annabelle is described as a quirky character as during one Royal Celebration, she got loose from her rider and was seen running across the red tarmac of Buckingham Palace! Annabelle was a favourite with the box drivers as she was great to handle and always travelled well. This cheeky grey mare was continuously caught searching people’s pockets for treats!
