The Equine
Industry Welfare Guidelines Compendium - the industry reference
point for equine welfare - has been launched on behalf of the
UK’s equine industry by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal,
patron of The Home of Rest for Horses.
The Compendium lays down minimum standards of horse, pony or donkey care, husbandry and welfare and the legal aspects which relate to these and is used as a legal referral document in court by local authorities, police and welfare organisations prosecuting cases of neglect or cruelty.
The Compendium is sponsored by the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) in association with The Home of Rest for Horses and 20 other equine charities ranging from Riding for the Disabled to the RSPCA. The Compendium is available to download free from www.newc.co.uk.
Paul Jepson, Chief Executive and Veterinary Director of The Home of Rest for Horses said: "The equine industry pulling together to fund, produce and support this invaluable document under the banner of the National Equine Welfare Council banner is a great achievement. Her Royal Highness is a leading authority on the horse and we are delighted
that she is launching this welfare compendium which is a source of reference for everybody involved with horses, ponies and donkeys."
Her Royal Highness formally received the document from representatives of the Mounted Branch of the Metropolitan Police - PC Kim Hussy on Northern Humbug, a 17.3 hand piebald police horse known as Bugsie and PC Mark Waller on Sam, a chestnut gelding - and Inspector Chris Rowbottom of the Dogs and Mounted Unit of the City of London Police.
