Applying for a grant
The basic criteria for applications are that they reflect the mission of The Home and that they are recommended by its scientific sub-committee.
Organisations eligible to apply are veterinary schools and other university departments, research institutes and charities in the United Kingdom
that have an interest in the horse. Veterinary practices with registered equine hospitals may also apply for the equine scholarships and
appropriately qualified individuals may apply for the clinical awards.
Scientific Projects
Applications will be accepted for equine research projects from all UK veterinary schools, institutions and specialist private referral practices.
Research must be non-invasive and ethically approved and a strong relevance to equine welfare needs to be presented. Research projects have been
supported for Strangles, Navicular, Sweet Itch, Colic, Ragwort Posioning , Grass Sickness, Osteoarthritis, Cardiology, Equine Herpesvirus, Farriery,
Dentistry, Laminitis and Recurrent Airway Obstruction.
Application forms will be available from January 2007 with a deadline date for submission of 1st May 2007. Successful projects will be able to commence
from January 2008.
Clinical Training Scholarships
The aim of an equine scholarship is to provide specialist clinical training to a veterinary graduate who has at least two year's experience in veterinary
practice, and whose degree is registerable with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Subjects include pathology, surgery, internal medicine,
epidemiology and anaesthesia. Institutions that are eligible are UK university veterinary schools, other university departments and institutes
in the UK that have an interest in the horse, recognised charitable institutions in the UK e.g. The Animal Health Trust, and equine veterinary practices
with registered equine hospitals in the UK.
Application forms will be available from January 2007 with a deadline date for submission of 1st May 2007. Successful scholarship applications will
be able to commence from January 2008.
Clinical Awards
Clinical Awards provide specialist training in equine clinical subjects to veterinary surgeons in the UK. Applications are invited from individuals
whose degree is registerable with the RCVS or European equivalent and who intend to work in the equine field in the UK after the period of the award.
These awards are granted to:
- Diploma Candidates who will already be enrolled with the RCVS or European equivalent and who will have progressed to the point of applying for final approval of experience and permission to sit an entry to the forthcoming examination
- Fellowship by Thesis Candidates who are registered with the RCVS and whose proposed course of study and title of their thesis must have been approved by the Fellowship Board
Application forms will be available from January 2007 with a deadline date for submission of 1st May 2007. Successful scholarship applications will be able to commence from January 2008.
