HRH The Duke of Edinburgh opens equine surgical suite
A £1 million grant from The Home of Rest for Horses in Buckinghamshire has enabled the University of Cambridge to complete the building and equipping of its John Hickman Equine Surgical Suite.
Opened by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, the suite incorporates an MRI Scanner and facilities to carry out the latest equine diagnostic techniques. At the heart of the centre are three large diagnostic
rooms that will form the main focus for clinical investigation. Techniques included are ultrasonography, endososcopy, electrocardiography and thermography. In support of education the building contains
a multimedia seminar room and a networked student room.
The Equine Surgical Suite will significantly improve the welfare and treatment of referred cases through improved training for veterinary surgeons and nurses and the general welfare of the UK equine
population. It will also function as a major focus for clinical research and be at the forefront of breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of equine diseases. The Home of Rest for Horses has been
providing grants in support of equine welfare since 1965 and has grown to become the leading provider of such grants in the UK.
Brigadier Jepson, Home of Rest for Horses Chief Executive and resident Veterinary Director says, "The Home of Rest for Horses is deeply committed to improving equine welfare and veterinary treatment.
This new diagnostic facility at the nucleus of one of Britain's leading veterinary universities will enable future equine veterinarians to have access to the very latest equipment and will also benefit
the horse population which depends on the skills offered at this site."
