An Unlikely Friendship
An extraordinary friendship has blossomed at The Home of Rest for Horses between Pipkin, a 32-inch (8-hand) skewbald, miniature Shetland
pony and Iceland, a 16.3 hand striking Windsor Grey.
Pipkin is not only The Home's smallest resident but is also one of the oldest. At 30 years old she lived with her owners for more than 20
years in Ascot, Berkshire until retiring to The Home several years ago. Iceland, born in 1982, lived a very grand life at The Royal Mews
and was part of the team that pulled the Gold Coach during The Queen's Golden Jubilee Celebrations in 2002 his last engagement before his
retirement.
Pipkin is so close to Iceland that she can very often be seen grazing between the grey's legs.
"Many of the horses who have retired to The Home form bonds, but we have never seen anything quite so unusual as this unlikely pairing," says
Chief Executive Paul Jepson. "Because horses' herd instinct is very strong, it is natural for alliances to form and there is nothing more reassuring
than to see a newcomer developing a friendship which will continue throughout their retirement."
