The Home of Rest for Horses, the oldest horse charity in the UK, is changing its name.
Patron HRH the Princess Royal today (Thursday September 28 2006) announced that it has
been renamed The Horse Trust.
The charity has grown in stature since its foundation 120 years ago as a rest home for
the working horses of London. It now embraces a diverse agenda of welfare, science and
education which was not reflected by the simple name 'The Home of Rest for Horses'.
The Princess Royal said: "Looking to the future, the name The Home of Rest for Horses
doesn't reflect the diverse activities of the charity. And that is a reflection on the
grants and the places they have gone to. But with a history of 120 years, it is important
to retain the name as a shop window for promoting responsible horse ownership and an example
of best practice. But as the advertising slogan says it’s more than just a rest home. As we
celebrate 120 years of success it’s time to look forward. So from henceforth we will now call
the society The Horse Trust.
"To those who have done such a good job on the work of the Home of Rest for Horses, and the owners
who have gained confidence from the advice for their horses and most particularly for future horse
owners, who come into ownership with less knowledge than ever before but much greater wherewithal
to do so, we believe that the change of name is fundamental and I propose a vote a vote of
encouragement and particularly for future success to The Horse Trust."
