Vulcan and Pepe join the Horse Trust
Two former Army horses have been retired to The Horse Trust's Home of Rest for Horses
in Buckinghamshire from their working base in Germany.
Vulcan - a former Household Cavalry 16.3 hand cross thoroughbred black gelding - and
Pepe - a 15.3 hands former King’s Troop Irish Draft bay gelding - had been based at
the Army's Paderborn Equestrian Centre in Sennelager, Germany.
The Centre had originally been home to 60 horses from military, private and school
backgrounds. But eventually only four Household Cavalry horses and two military
instructors' horses from Knightsbridge barracks remained, the centre amalgamated
with the local pony club and a new home had to be found for Pepe and Vulcan.
Their future was bleak as sadly both have suffered incurable injuries and were
unable to continue in service. The centre organised a special fund-raising day
where the locals of Sennelager were able to enjoy their last opportunity to see
the four Household Cavalry Blacks on parade. The funds raised paid for their
transport to honourable retirement to The Horse Trust.
"We pulled all the stops out to help Paderborn Equestrian Centre and we are
delighted to be able to offer both Vulcan and Pepe the perfect retirement with
their former comrades," said The Horse Trust yard manager Mrs Shirley Abbott.
