Horse Trust quotes the price of ignorance
Science is knowledge... but the enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the pretence of knowledge.
That quotation from Prof Stephen Hawkin is as true in the field of equine welfare as it is in pure
and applied science, says Paul Jepson, the chief executive of The Horse Trust.
"Call it pretence of knowledge, ignorance, tragedy or just plain stupidity, we deal with it every day
at The Horse Trust," he said. "Can you conceive of someone who buys a horse unseen for thousands of
pounds on the internet to end up with something totally different to what they thought they had bought?
"The personal circumstances of some people who seek our help are genuinely desperate - and can be very
harrowing for our staff. We pride ourselves on punching above our weight but, when fretting about costs -
particularly manpower - it is necessary to stop and remember that every one of our staff spends a
significant part of their time on the front lines of welfare.
