27/10/2012 10th Annual Apprentice Farrier Seminar day hosted at The Horse Trust

On a cold day in October, the Horse Trust hosted more than 85 apprentice farriers for the 10th Annual Stromsholm 2012 Apprentice Seminar. This event has become one of the largest professional development days in the apprentice farrier calendar and gives apprentices an insight into and a practice run for their Diploma of the Worshipful Company of Farriers (DipWCF) exam.

All four apprentice year groups attended, with each year group having the chance to make different types of shoes in a given time limit, and the apprentices had the chance to shoe a horse’s front foot in an hour. Some of the Horse Trust’s horses, including Cracker, Venture and Chuzzlewit, benefited from some shoeing from the apprentices. Attendees also had the opportunity to practice their oral and theory exams and attended talks and demonstrations on topics ranging from feed supplements to materials for plastic shoeing.

At the end of the day prizes were given to the best performing apprentices of the day. Carl Betteson from Stromsholm presented the Horse Trust Chief Executive, Jeanette Allen, with an anatomical model of a horse’s foot as a thank you for using The Horse Trust as a venue.
